I grew up in the Philippines.
My family and I used to live in a wooden house at a little town called Villa.
Probably one of my best childhood memories were the summer times. My older cousins would spend their vacation at our house.
We’d watch endless TV, play games, eat fruits and snacks. My heart was always happy.
My cousins and brother usually stayed up late and I forced myself to accompany them. We often slept at the living room and I’d wake up to the smell of ibos and kutsinta.
Other times I woke up early and accompanied my mom to the wet market.
The rest of the morning was spent watching Myx or listening to the radio. While waiting for our lunch, my cousin Richel would dance around and I pretty much enjoyed it. She also made the tastiest ice candies!
When my mom would ask my cousin Bebe to buy something, I’d jump up, get ready and go with her. Sometimes we strolled around the plaza before going home.
When it’s too hot and boring, we’d go to my auntie Janet’s house (which was a couple blocks away) to spend the afternoon, then walk home in the cool of the night. I loved looking at the stars and the moon. I felt special because I thought the moon was following me everywhere I go. It stopped when I did, and it moved when I moved too.
As a child, I was easily happy and excited. I loved being with my family.
Those were moments I will never forget. Sometimes I wish I could go back and live as a child all over again.
But we all know that’s not possible. We only have one life and we can’t go back in time. Let’s make the most of what we have now.
What are some of your best childhood memories?
